ED ALLEN

July news begins on a somber note as Corvette Memphis lost one of its own July 10th.  Long time member, frequent volunteer and webmaster, Ed Allen passed away at home surrounded by his family.   A memorial service was held at St. George’s Episcopal Church Saturday, July 17th.  A large contingent of members attended and then visited with the family and their other friends following the service.

Ed was a person about whom you could never say enough good things and to try would seem extremely inadequate.  He will be really missed in the days ahead and most of us will think of him often.  Of course, the difficult times belong to those left behind.  Please say a kind word to Susan and keep her and Ed’s entire family in your thoughts and prayers.

Corvette Memphis, Inc. voted to order a brick inscribed with Ed’s name to be permanently placed on display at the National Corvette Museum.  If you would like to make a personal donation in Ed’s honor, the two deserving entities listed below would have been Ed’s choices.

JULY MEETING

The July meeting, as usual, was held at Sunrise Chevrolet on Houston Levee near Collierville Tuesday, July 13th.  Cathy Gardner reported that the GM at Sunrise Chevrolet, Kenny Derek, had become a ‘Vetter.  He recently purchased a 2007 coupe.  Sounds like a good candidate for membership.

Chuck Wombaugh presented all particulars surrounding the Cotton Festival Show to be held in Somerville September 11th (nine/eleven).  Chuck is seeking volunteers from the CMI ranks to help run the show.  He mentioned a need for judges in particular.

Charlie Shaw pitched the Collierville Police Department show which he administers each year.  This is one of the biggest shows in the area.  It takes lots of folks to make it happen and Charlie needs volunteers.  This one is Saturday, September 25th.  If you can help, contact Charlie directly.  He will appreciate it.

Dinner at Corky’s Bar-B-Q in Collierville was fun…as usual.

BARTLETT CRUISE IN

Jim Willis and several others have committed to making the weekly Bartlett cruise in a “Vette in” this Thursday, July 22nd.  There is a major call for CMI members to attend.  Jim has also made the announcement on Corvette Forum and the club from Jackson, TN has committed to come.  We’ll have at least two canopies to provide shade for our attendees and perhaps some refreshment, too.  Gordon Dodge plans to ice-down some of the soft drinks remaining from the progressive dinner.  If you have a Corvette, bring it.  If you have two, bring both.  If you have more than two, bring them all.  Let’s make a big splash Thursday.  The cruise in is held each week in the parking lot on the northwest corner of Stage and Kirby Whitten in Bartlett.  Jim calls it the Blue Plate cruise in.  It is actually a spin off of the Classic Chevy Club and is located in the parking lot of the now defunct Blue Plate Café.  There are several very viable restaurants within walking distance if you want to have dinner while at the cruise in.  Look forward to seeing you there.

ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!

Sherrye and Jim Willis are the CMI leaders for our next road tour outing.  The Corvette Caravan will leave at 4:00 p.m. sharp Saturday, July 24th.  We will drive to Century Farms Winery near Jackson, TN for a fun evening.  Century Farms provides a tour of their vineyards; describes the wine making process; and, hosts a wine tasting.  There will be live music outside Saturday evening.

The club made this same trip last year and those attending all seemed to have lots of fun.  Last year, we drove to Jackson for lunch…then to the winery.  This year, no lunch run is in the plans.  Sherrye suggest you bring a picnic basket to enjoy during the open air concert.  Chilled wine is available for purchase at the winery.  You can also purchase wine by the bottle to bring home.

Please assemble at the shopping center on the northwest corner of highway 64 and Canada road.  Please be on time.  The caravan will leave at 4p sharp and will travel I-40 east.  Don’t forget your bug spray.  Last year, the mosquitoes ate more than all the members combined.  If you went last year, you’ll surely want to go back.  If you didn’t go last year, you really missed a fun trip.  DON’T miss this one!

MYSTERY DINNER CRUISE

July 7th was the first Wednesday of the month and that means Mystery Dinner Cruise.  Twelve examples of America’s only true sports car (and 1 wanna-be) qued up for the eleven mile trip into Fayette County and the Chuck Wombaugh city of Oakland.  Twenty-six CMI members dined on everything  from steak to spaghetti at Olympic Steak House and Pizza.  The salad bar, including soup and dessert, was outstanding.  If you missed it, you missed a real treat.  Plan to join us for the August trek.  Put Monday, August 4th on your calendar.  Where will go this time?  Who knows, it’s a Mystery Dinner Cruise!

VISITORS

Everyone ooohed and ahhhhed over the 2010 Grand Sport roadster driven by our guest, Alan Martin.  It is one gorgeous car (aren’t all Corvettes?)  We hope Alan will visit more of our activities and maybe consider becoming a member.

MUSINGS OF A VERBALLY INSANE COPYWRITER

We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes

But, the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese

Yet, the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice

Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men

Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?

If I speak of my foot and show you my feet

And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth, and a whole set are teeth,

Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?

While one may be that and three would be those

Hat in the plural would never be hose

And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren

But though we say mother, we never sat methren.

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him

But imagine the feminine:  she, shis and shim!

Bottom line…English is a crazy language.

GIGGLES

For all of us who are married, were married, wish they were married or wish they weren’t married this is something that will make you smile.

Chuck was driving home from one of his business trips in Arizona.  He saw an elderly Navajo man walking on the side of the road.

As the trip was a long and quiet one, Chuck stopped his car an asked the Navajo man if he would like a ride.  With a silent nod of the head, the man got into the car.

Resuming the journey, Chuck tried to make small talk with the Navajo man.  But, the old man sat quietly looking intently at everything he saw…studying every little detail…until he noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Chuck.

“What in bag?” asked the old man.

Chuck looked down at the brown bag and said, “it’s a bottle of wine.  I got it for my wife.”

The Navajo man sat silently for another moment or two.

Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder he replied, “good trade”.
